Close Encounters: Aliens and other strangers in later medieval Bristol
Peter Fleming (UWE)
As one of medieval England’s leading port towns, Bristol played host to a diversity of migrants from beyond the borders of England. This paper explores the nature and identity of these, including French, Dutch, Icelanders, Irish and Welsh, and in so doing seeks to address questions about how cultural/ethnic identities were constructed in a period of fluid national boundaries.
