“Being able to study the local impact of major events using local sites, local sources and local stories makes the history relevant, interesting and concrete. It hooks and engages, and this is vital. I truly believe that well-researched, carefully designed local history that illuminates national events can make history relevant and interesting to all, and that’s why projects like England’s Past for Everyone are so important.” JOHN WELHAM, EDUCATION CONSULTANT FOR EPE AND AST CORNWALL

Through innovative partnerships and in consultation with schools, we are providing easily accessible and reliable local history materials linked to the national curriculum. Online resources including units of work, time lines and historical resource material will be available through our ‘Schools Learning Zone’ (available January 2009) to show how local history can be used creatively across subject areas.

Throughout our projects, children are getting ‘hands-on’ experience exploring their local history and relating the past with the present day. Our programme supports the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto and encourages learning from Key Stage 1 – 3.

Our partners to date include museums, artists, storytellers and record offices. We don’t believe in duplication so we try to research and encourage partnerships with organisations doing similar or with the potential to deliver, therefore encouraging sustainable resources.

Our projects have already started and will continue until 2010:
Bristol

Cornwall

Derbyshire

County Durham

Exmoor

Herefordshire

Kent

Oxfordshire

Sussex

Wiltshire

“Children taking ownership of their own learning and developing key history skills will give them a valuable appreciation of history in later life. As a school we continually strive to make our learning in school fun and relevant – this project will enhance the cross curricular approach using our local environment”

MRS DEBI DOWNING, HEAD OF WYLYE VALLEY SCHOOL, WILTSHIRE
