Theme: Industry / Victorians
Based on a series of lesson plans and an interactive animation, this teaching material explores papermaking in Kent. Pupils can learn how their locality fits into a bigger picture – that of the industrialisation of England in the 19th century – and the consequence and impact on the environment and social conditions. This material can be taught in its entirety, or as separate sessions incorporated in other curriculum areas; it has many opportunities for cross-curricular links with Geography, Literacy, Art and Design, Science and PSHE (environmental issues). This unit of material promotes learning outside the classroom.
This unit of teaching material was written by Jessika Worrall. The papermaking interactive was developed by Shaun Askew (with input from Matthew Bristow and Skye Dillon, EPE).
The material was supported by historical research for the England’s Past for Everyone paperback The Medway Valley: a Kent landscape transformed
