Theme: Multiethnic

This teaching material is designed to explore one of England’s most important ports, Bristol. Those who have made Bristol their home range from medieval Jews to modern day asylum seekers.

This material shows how Bristol has always had ethnic minority communities, and investigates trade, culture and religion in the city’s history. The material can be taught in its entirety, or as separate sessions incorporated in other curriculum areas; it has many opportunities for cross-curricular links with Citizenship, English, Art, Drama and Geography. This unit of material covers the following topics: Medieval Jewry; Medieval Migration; Tudor and Stuart Ethnic Minorities; Religion and Huguenot Refugees; Slave Trade; Victorians.
