England’s Past for Everyone in Cornwall

About Us

Cornwall is producing two separate studies in which volunteer groups are playing key roles. One seeks to show the relationship between the fishing and agricultural communities of Mousehole, Paul and Newlyn. Wills are being used to identify the wealth of various families. The study of marriages looks at how the Cornish language waxed and waned by examining the interplay between groups. The Religious Sites of Cornwall is a county-wide study, with sites recorded by volunteers and a major introductory essay.

Dr Jo Mattingly is a former VCH researcher, now very active in Penwith local history and the county’s museums. Dr Nicholas Orme, author of the Religious Sites study, is one of Britain’s leading historians and author of the best-selling books Medieval Children and The Saints of Cornwall. Both are employed by the University of Exeter.

The project partners include the Cornwall VCH Trust and the University of Exeter.
