In 1962, Avonmouth Dockers refused to work with any ‘coloured’ labour resulting in the dismissal of some 60 ‘coloured workers.’ These mainly West Indian men had been part of a contingent of 200 registered unemployed workers directed by the Bristol Labour Exchange to help unload a cargo of bananas off the ss Tilapa. One of them Roy Alexander Wright, a Jamaican immigrant, was said to have assaulted his white foreman, Reginald William Bell preciptating, a ‘general melee between white and coloured workers’.
