Theme: Farming
This teaching material encourages pupils to learn about farming in Exmoor (1940s – 2006) using a variety of sources: oral history; maps; photographs; land surveys and timelines. The lesson plans offer engaging and challenging ways in which pupils can learn about the history and methods of hill farming, using Cloggs Farm (Exmoor) as an example. This material can be taught in its entirety, or as separate sessions incorporated in other curriculum areas; it has many opportunities for cross-curricular links with Geography. This unit of material promotes learning outside the classroom.
This unit of teaching material was developed by Hilary Binding and teachers from Dulverton Middle School.
The material was supported by historical research for the England’s Past for Everyone paperback Exmoor: the Making of an English Upland.
