England’s Past for Everyone in Exmoor

Get involved – Exmoor volunteer opportunities

An important aspect of England’s Past for Everyone was to involve local communities and other interested parties in the research process.

Volunteer project details

Group One: recorded historic farmsteads within the project area (of which there are at least 200).

Group Two: recorded green lanes and old roads that link the ancient settlements and farms within the project area.

Group Three: recorded abandoned farmsteads using historic maps and census records; then they followed up this research by recording the physical remains of these sites.

Group Four: carried out survey and archaeological excavation on field boundaries and ridge and furrow within the project area

Training was identified to:

  • Enable volunteers to understand the historical landscape of Exmoor and why it matters
  • Produce outline descriptions and surveys of historical farmsteads
  • Use documentary and cartographic source material
  • Use digital cameras to record site information
  • Input site information into a useable database

Although these initial projects have been completed some volunteers have found new projects within the Exmoor national park. If you are interested contact Rob Wilson-North at Exmoor House, Dulverton.
