Get involved – Derbyshire volunteer opportunities
An important aspect of England’s Past for Everyone is to involve local communities and other interested parties in the research process.

Volunteer project details
The EPE volunteer group has contributed extensively to the Bolsover project. The group, for example, looked at the 1871 and 1901 censuses for Bolsover and Whaley. Analysis demonstrated the impact that the arrival of large scale deep-coal mining had on the age-sex structure, occupations and origins of the population. A number of field visits have been held, looking at other areas researched by the group.
Volunteer research has now largely finished on the Bolsover section of the EPE project. Members of the group are now looking at Ault Hucknall and the Hardwick estate. 16th and 17th century probate records for the area are being examined, along with other records.
Training activity: Dudley Fowkes, who has a wealth of experience and knowledge of training volunteers, is our leader and volunteer group leader and co-ordinator. A document has been produced entitled “How to do Derbyshire” which talks volunteers through local research. Other professionals are on hand to advise and direct.
