This school project aimed to explore the coal mining community of Bolsover in the early 1900s. Year 5 and Year 9 pupils were involved in a visit to the National Coal Mining Museum, census research and role-play/interview activities; they also created webpages to display their work.

The project was based on academic research by Dudley Fowkes and Dr Philip Riden (for the EPE publication Bolsover: Castle,Town Colliery).

Orlinda Dias, Derbyshire County Council, said the following about this project:

“The project has enabled a group of adults and young people to work together on something new. It has supported the development of knowledge and skills and created an experience that project participants wish to recreate.

The most beneficial part of the project is the commitment to extend this work across the schools. It will promote better partnerships between schools and with other partners such as the library and archives, as well as historical organisations/sites.”
